TRICE EXTENDS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD AT AN EVENTFUL SNETTERTON
Racing driver Toby Trice has extended his lead in the Ginetta GT Academy after a mixed bag of racing at Snetterton last weekend. On-track drama and tricky conditions ultimately couldn’t prevent his cool and professional style from securing three more class wins.
Ask Toby Trice what Snetterton means to him though, and you get a pretty interesting answer by all accounts. Having had some bad experiences on its track in the past, it's safe to say, Trice is not a fan. Not only this but his driving style favours quick corners over the Norfolk circuit’s tight turns.
Typically for Trice, he is quick to mention the positives as well. Looking back on his pre-race preparations for the GT Academy’s third round at Snetterton, Toby says: “We came into it blind, to be honest! With no testing possible leading up to the race weekend and with Friday practice and qualifying not going to plan either, I quickly realised this was going to be one hell of a challenge. But with a great team by my side, I was ready. It was then just a matter of getting our heads down to see what we could achieve.”
Settling for third place on the grid after qualifying Trice then held onto high hopes for the weather, which on this occasion was on his side. All three of the GT Academy races ultimately remained dry amid rainstorms.
Trice describes the action from race one: “Not only was it an intense battle up at the front, when a competitor hit the mud early on, the resulting spray covered my windscreen not once, but twice. By this point, I must have had just 10% visibility, and couldn't risk using the wipers. Mental resilience is something I’m no stranger to, though, and with some technical support and a good dose of luck, we got a result — first in class and second overall.”
Races two and three were uneventful by comparison. Trice and his team had agreed on holding a steady line just off the pace for the Sunday races. This was to look after the tyres and manage the myriad technical challenges Snetterton throws up. This planning alongside some precise driving secured Trice first place in his class and third place overall in both races.
Team Trice has come away from Snetterton with three wins that have increased his Ginetta GT Academy championship lead to 107 points. Trice is next out on track with the GT Academy on the 25th and 26th of September at Silverstone, the home of British motorsport.
